Unique Improvements With Glass Tiles
Glass tiles are a bright and colorful decorating accent that can have applications in both inside and outside decor. They are not often used, which means you can create a unique look.

One of the most popular of tile materials, glass tiles can be used in many different ways. They have no problems with getting wet so they are ideal for bathrooms and pool areas. They can be used both indoors and outdoors. One of the best features of glass tiles is the wide range of colors available. The clear and reflective nature of glass gives color application potential that exceeds just about any other type of tile material.

Most glass tiles are manufactured in 2 inch by 2 inch by 5/8ths sizes. They are mounted on a 12 x 12 mesh for easy installation. They are most often mounted by using an adhesive cement and grout. Some tiles are designed specifically for floors and are generally 12 inch x 12 inch size. Although glass is a poor choice for many high traffic areas, there are certain applications where it can be the perfect choice for a floor tile application.

Installation is, of course, much more difficult with glass tiles than with interlocking floor tiles or the easy peel and stick type. The surface area of the to be covered must be carefully prepared by cleaning and smoothing before application begins. The instructions for the chosen type of adhesive must be carefully followed. Generally, the adhesive must be applied evenly to the back of the individual tile as well as spread over the entire surface.

Perhaps, the biggest worry in the installation of a glass tile is cutting the tile. It is usually impossible to create a tile , even a small area over a kitchen counter, without the necessity to cut the final tiles to fit. The cutting or breaking of glass tiles is not very difficult when you have the right tools available to do it. Cutting machines that are also used on ceramic tile work perfectly and even allow curved cuts. With a little practice this can be handled by the do it yourself installer.

Glass tiles and mosaics invoke memories of the earliest applications of tiles. They were used as decorations in the homes of wealthy Egyptians and Romans and they can bring the same sense of wealth and history to your home today. Although many tile types have been developed recently that are not as delicate and can be installed with much less difficulty, there has really been nothing to replace the elegance and bright color possibilities of glass tiles.
